El Malpais

We decided we needed a bit of an escape from the city, so we drove a hour west from Albuquerque to Grants and then turned south into the Malpais National Conservation Area.  The campgrounds and picnic areas are closed, but the hiking trails remain accessible.  We parked at the Zuni-Acoma trailhead and walked for a couple hours through a landscape of volcanic flows, sandstone bluffs and  twisted old junipers.

I took a deep breath of fresh air as if I were along with you on this hike. Thanks for sharing!

Definitely a good idea to make a little extra effort to get outside somewhere new. Lots of elk and deer sign, The dog had a great run. Next time we'll get up early and maybe see some wildlife.

Hi Mike, my family tree is not very interesting at all, but my cohabitant Bob is a Grant and we have had quite a bit of fun tracing his family back and forth with a lots of help from his cousins. We haven’t filled in the western link, but I look forward to the challenge. Like the Huntington’s, they are all pretty much descended from one dude. I enjoyed the photos.

Not sure about the origin of the Grants name. I'll try to remember to look it up. A lot of southerners migrated to New Mexico after the Civil War. Most place names in New Mexico are Spanish or Indigenous.
