Albuquerque Municipal Airport Terminal

The Albuquerque Municipal Airport, financed by a half-million dollar WPA grant, was opened in 1939. The Pueblo-style terminal building was designed by Ernest Blumenthal.

The Airport was one of many New Deal projects undertaken in New Mexico from 1933 to 1943. By 1935 over half of the state's population was employed in public works development and construction such as the airport terminal.

The Albuquerque Museum Photo Archives contain a selection of photographs made when the Terminal was in use in the 1940s and 1950s; they can be viewed in the museum's archives.

My photographs of the terminal were made with the Minoltina AL-S.

Hi,

While looking at the pictures you have here, I did not expect that this is the airport. However, I am looking for more information about the albuquerque airport. I'll be digging some more here. If you could give me more information.

The pictures are of the old airport terminal which was in use from 1939 to 1965. There is a wikipedia page about the airport's history at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albuquerque_International_Sunport. As I mentioned in the posting, the Albuquerque Museum photo archives show many views of the original terminal building when it was in use in the 1940s and 1950s.

How fascinating. It's not a look that you associate with airports nowadays. The site and design feel more like some sort of office, or museum. It's a nice look, and an interesting glimpse of how things were in the past.
