People are able to get very close to the cougars in their enclosure and I often hear them saying they would like to be able to pet the big cats. Having come face to face with one about five years ago in the Organ Mountains, I'm happy to have them on the other side of a sturdy pane of glass.
The cat -- he's looking at you as though you just called his name and he's thinking, "Oh, all right, I suppose."
